Hey y'all just starting the beginning thought process of having a few chickens just for the eggs. We haven't gotten our house built just yet. We still have a good 6+ months to go but I'd like to spend countless hours checking out and learning as much as possible. Am I crazy to hope my chickens will be "pets"?? :D

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join us here! Not crazy at all to have your chickens as pets :D Some make great lap chickens and love to be stroked and others will follow you around like dogs. It sure is great to have them as pets. Good luck for the future and be sure to ask any questions, everyone here to help you along the way.

Enjoy your time here on BYC :frow

! Happy you joined our flock. Yorkshire is correct - lots of owners of pet chickens on BYC! Certain breeds are more friendly and docile than others but the key is probably the time you spend with them to make them a good pet. I hear Silkies make a good pet chicken. Good luck to you on your adventure!!

Welcome! A good majority of us here have pet chickens.

I do!!

Welcome from Australia. I wish I could have had mine since chicks so they would be cuddly but i still love mine anyway! You will be so rewarded with chickens. There is not many people who look back and said i wished i hadn't so good luck

Not only can chickens make great pets, they can also make great HOUSE pets. Check out the thread "people with house chickens." There is also
"show us your house ducks." and I know of geese that are house birds. Generally smaller or bantam breeds do best in the house. Some pets just sleep in the house at night and go outside for the rest of the day.

I got chickens first time in July. I have 8 hens each a different breed, and 2 roos. 1 is RIR and the other a cuckoo maran. They both breed the hens all day long. A few weeks ago my buff Orpington went broody so I decided to give her eggs to sit on. 5 silkie crosses and 6 others that are cuckoo, copper Maran and an austra white. They started hatching yesterday and so far I have 5 black and 3 yellow chicks. 2 of the blacks are silkies bc of the 5 toes. 1 black is splotched with yellow so it's one of the marans. Question is...who's the daddy? Lol I'm curious to see how they feather out in a few months. Only time will tell. So far they are happy and active. The momma hen is getting tired of being penned up bc she's taking intertest in the food scraps I bring at night. Before she was like a zombie in hatching mode. Anyway 3 eggs are left in the nest and they are peeping right now. So I'm hoping for babies in the morning. That'll make 11 total!
