Beginning Chicken Mama

Today's Journey:
Got the other 5 babies set up in a bigger cage. 4 weeks old this coming Monday! They're so big! Ruby and Olive (2 black ones) appear to be duking it out over who gets to be QUEEN chica. Cleaning out previous tub for Izzy. Gotta keep her quarantined for at least 19 more days, finished her amoxicillin yesterday.
Izzy is definitely feeling better. Or so her behavior indicates. She's been quite spicy with me! I think she's very bored on her own. I'm going to set her up with a bigger tub today. Hubby is wonder man and continues working on the "Fort Knox" coop and run. Have a Deelightful Day!!!:D Will attach videos shortly, once I manage to do so! :hmm
That's good to hear!!! :love

To post videos, you have to post them in another host venue, such as YouTube first, then link them here.

Been struggling so busy and haven't been able to get online here. Right now I am looking for what I can do for my Buff Orpington Buffy. She has a puffy right eye. Red and puffy above it. No discharge etc. But I'm concerned as she's had it on and off for a couple weeks. It gets better than seems to return. Think it might be infected. I'm thinking she was having issues with other hens in pecking order. 1st pic is swollen puffy red Rt eye. 2nd pic is normal Lt eye. 3rd pic shows front view to show difference in swollen/puffiness on top of eyes.

Sorry about Buffy's eye. Sounds like most likely a pecking injury.

I would rinse her eye out with saline solution, and put Terramycin (antibiotic for eyes) or Neosporin without painkiller ointment in it twice a day which should help rid any infection that might be starting. If it gets worse, she'll probably need antibiotics.

I would post this in the Emergency Forum though to get some other's opinions.

Oh thank you! I'm new to this posting thing. Ok thx I do have neosporin no pain relief. I do have a neighbor who keeps chickens and she has some tylan antibiotic. Also someone on this site said hers looked similar maybe some sort of bug bite and benedryl cleared it up in 2 weeks.

If you think it's more from a bug bite, then the Benedryl (diphenhydramine) could help her feel better and help the swelling, but it shouldn't take two weeks; it should be a couple of days for the "venom" to work through her system and swelling to start subsiding. Something that takes two weeks to heal sounds more like an infection that healed on its own.

It wouldn't hurt to do both things either just in case. The only thing is when one of them works, you won't know which it was, but the important thing is that Buffy's eye gets better!

I wouldn't use your neighbor's antibiotic unless Buffy's eye turns worse.

Retirement hobby time! Have always wanted farm animals. Hubby likes eggs. A win win for us. I just bought 6 chicks. Black Jersey Giant "Rubie", Sapphire Gem "Sapphire" will be called Ira I think because I'm 99% certain "she" is a roo! Olive Egger "Olive Oyle", Americana/Easter Egger "April", Buff Orpington "Buffy", Isa Brown " Isabelle" (Izzy). Named to help me remember their breeds. I'm totally in ❤️ love w them.
Welcome. Great idea with the names as long as you don't have more than one of a breed:D

Thank you I did! 🙂

Can you put neosporin in a chick’s eyes? I have one that hatched with its eyes closed and swollen-looking. When I wet them with an eye saline rinse, he’s only able to open them in little slits, and when they dry, they’re shut again. Don’t know if it’s an infection, but willing to try neosporin ointment if it’s safe.

I would post this here for faster information: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures.10/

It's safe as long as it doesn't contain pain killer. I use Terramycin that I can get from Tractor Supply.
