Beginning my Chicken journey

So I bought a house almost 4 years ago and it came with a coup and now that I have the time and the finances to handle one with a few chickens I wanted to start this year. However it needs some repair much I will be doing in the next week but I am more concerned with what do I need down for the chickens. I have heard pine shavings, just grass and sand but I want to know the best to work with and maintain. I have been watching tons of videos on Youtube but I can't see to make a clear decision so I need others opinions on this. The coup is located under a deck, gets plenty of sun, nothing but dirt right now since I cleaned it all out and I deal with Missouri weather if that makes a difference.

I use pine shavings but others have had good luck with other types of bedding. Just go with whatever works best for you!
