My 3 BCM breed hens seem to be happy & healthy. They eat layer feed, get a few fruits & veggies occasionally for 'treats'. They are out in a protected yard foraging most of the day. Most recently, when they hear me open the back door or see me coming outside; they all run toward me clucking; I get down on their level to pet them, but I noticed the just peck at my hands really hard( like it hurts!) idk if they are expecting attention or food, I'm just not sure what to think. They seem to shy away when I try to pet them gently on their crop or back area. I handled them a lot as chicks so I don't think they are afraid of me. What am I missing here? I have nesting boxes set up for them with the hay in them that they are starting to make nesting bowls with, and I'll be using some ceramic eggs in their nests.

Mine are getting close to that age and they’re getting more demanding when they see me coming. In my experience, regardless of handling, most chickens get friendlier when they get close to point of lay. Which is why I don’t bother with handling them early on. I don’t want them any friendlier than they are just by nature of me bringing the food.

Thank you so much! I so appreciate your input!
