You wake up and feel cramped, so you push your way out of your prison and end up in a room full of other chicks screaming in chaos and crawling over one another.

"Mother? Mother? Mother!!"

Then these huge hands come in and start grabbing your mates, tossing them into boxes, some still have bits of shell on them. Suddenly the world goes dark and starts rocking, but all you can hear is the screaming of your friends. Strange loud noises come from outside, banging and crashing and rumbling.

"Mother? Mother? Mother!!"

Then the light comes on after an eternity in the dark and more hands reach in and start grabbing your buddies. More screaming as you are grabbed too and tossed into a box with a few dozen others. then these huge faces start looking at you, with hopeful hungry expressions.

"Mother? Mother? Mother!!"

More darkness and another long rumbling ride in a dark box of screaming companions. The light returns once more and you and your mates are dropped in a box. There is food and water, but still no Mother.

No warm chest to hide under, no comforting cluck or the feeling of safety that only a mother can bring. Just the sounds of your cluck mates calling out, hoping to find Mom.

"Mother?"

I just got 10 meat birds and 2 brown layers yesterday. On the ride home from the feed store, I put my hands into the box because they were screaming horribly. I hovered my hands over their backs and as soon as I did, they clustered under my palms and were quiet. I put them in with the 1.5 week old Orpingtons....they get along great.

Way to make me feel bad first thing in the morning! You pretty much described it the way I thought of it. I try extra hard to make them feel more secure when I get them home. I actually have a big stuffed animal, a chicken, that we suspend in a corner of the brooder. They love it!

Makes the Mommy in me want to cuddle and baby them just thinking about it!

Awwwww, poor babies.

It makes you feel so bad for them.
