Being Broody

if you notice a hen go broody can you stick her with a rooster so that her eggs are fertile or do you have to do it before and hope she goes broody?
 
Once a hen goes broody they stop laying eggs (or mine do anyways). So a hen would need to be with a rooster for about a week or two prior to ensure that the eggs being laid were truly fertile.
