So I guess since I didn't do this when I joined I'll do it now...
Hi! I'm from southwest Ohio. I lurked on here and posted under my sister's user name for several weeks before my sis made me get my own lol. My family has had layers since (I think) I was about 3, and for several years I was the chicken-feeder and egg-washer and seller of the family. Then all of our Cuckoo Dorkings and the last of our first bunch our Amercaunas (one of them lived for like 9 years. we thought she was never gonna die-not that we wanted her to-lol) were eaten one spring about 5 years ago, and when we got several Red Dorkings that fall, my sister took over the chickens. She fell in love with them. That started this family's adventure into showing the birds. At the moment, my sister has Ameracaunas, Rhode Island Reds, Scots Dumpy's, Japanese Bantams, and is getting Seramas. And yes, they all have names. We both also raise broilers every year. I have two Blue Belgian Bearded D'Anvers (try saying that 5 times fast-lol) named Elizabeth and Mr.Darcy. I'm content with just having a couple for pets and showmanship, because my real focus is my goats. I raise Nubian dairy goats and, to a lesser extent, Boer meat goats. I am a member of the American Dairy Goat Association and the South Western Ohio Dairy Goat Association. This year I started putting my dairy does on the DHIR (Dairy Herd Improvement Registry) milk test. I LOVE goat milk, have made cottage cheese, butter, yogurt and ice cream, and this year am hoping to learn to make soap and cheese.
There's plenty more to this history--isn't there always-- but this is too long already!
ps- (and this should have probably gone at the beginning) BYC is awesome. I think it's so cool how ya'll keep it so family-friendly and organized, and the people on here are great!
