I've been using this in my ducks' house:

--which has actually been my personal preference so far, (especially over pine shavings, which was a big goop of YUCK) but as you can see it's a little pricey. The privately owned farm store around the corner from me sells bales of straw for 5.50, so I was wondering if fresh straw would work just as well? What does everyone on here use?

I use bales of straw usually, hay sometimes. I prefer chopped, but my closest store doesn't offer it.

I actually prefer wood shavings, but my vet recommended I use hay or straw for bumblefoot prevention.

I have a 10’ x 20’ barn just for my ducks...ten of them. They go out to swim and forage every day, but at late afternoon they go in voluntarily to eat, drink and sleep. I use straw.

I clean my barn EVERY single day...and every morning when I let them out, it looks like a frat party had taken place the night before. Ducks are the messiest animals I’ve ever encountered.

Depending on the size of your duck home, I think straw is the best, most economical way to go. shavings I use to raise ducklings.

Metzger Farms recommends chopped straw, but they have a special machine that does that.

$5.50 a bale is a great price for straw. As long as it’s fresh and dry.
