Best big brown eggs

Funny you should ask..............

I got a 3 oz. (that's right folks, 3 oz.!!) egg just this morning from one of my standard BO hens.

They lay beautiful dark brown eggs everyday, laying straight through this brutal winter. Adverage egg size has been 2.5 oz. The one today was exceptionally large. They are like clockwork. So far 8 hens, 8 eggs everyday. They are only 7 months old, and started laying on Christmas Eve, when the temperature was -10.

I love these BO girls of mine!

Just my humble 2 cents.

I have RIR's, BO's, BR's, WW's and CM's. I get large eggs of varying shades of brown. As the BO's age the eggs are getting larger while the rest remain about the same size. When I have gotten hatching eggs for orpingtons from older hens they have always exceeded 2.75 ounces. Big eggs!

We have 11 Barred Rock hens. They are our first chickens, so I don't have experience with other breeds. But they give us great brown eggs. They are almost 10 months old. We are in frigid Michigan. We have a light turn on at 5AM. We are getting 7 to 11 large brown eggs per day.

And they are very friendly and mild-tempered. They follow us around and love to be picked up and have they chests petted.

Most of our eggs are about 2.5 ounces. But yesterday we got a super big egg. It's 4.2 ounces! See pictures at my "Eggzilla! Our Biggest egg ever!" posting.

I get the largest ones from my Buff Orps-well, one of my girls lays a super jumbo and the other one slightly smaller. Then the RIRs and the Barred Rocks lay the next largest ones, basically the same size, but all would qualify as jumbo most of the time. Those breeds of mine are all two years old now.

I rank my brown layers like this, according to your criteria:

1. New Hampshires
2. RIR-close second but slightly smaller
3. Barred Rocks
4. Buff Orps

While the Buff Orp egg is larger than the BR, it is not as regular. Fewer eggs, less friendly than the others listed, and they seem to eat the most=expensive eggs...at least that's my experience with buff orps. Not that they are bad, just not as good as the others.

I am so mad at myself! I forgot to "subscribe" to this and forgot about asking!!!!
Thank you all so much for your great info/replies!!

I hear that one of your Canadian native breeds - the Chantecler - is a good layer of big eggs. Very cold-hardy, too!
