Hi everyone,
Hubby and I have a small flock of laying hens. Thinking of adding a few more. Would like one to get one that lays blue eggs. I know several do. But, also know one like the Easter Egger is not guaranteed to lay blue eggs. Does anyone have experience with Ameraucaunas? Thanks.

Hi and welcome to BYC. I’m sure if you do a search you will find a breed thread that should give you all the information you need.

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 I’d suggest including your location using the guide in that link. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes

Unless you have a reputable breeder, pure Ameracaunas are difficult to find and expensive. Most labeled Ameracaunas are actually EEs, even from hatcheries. I have several EEs in my flock and have beautiful shades of greens and blues. They are definitely among my favorite!
Good luck with your search!

Blue eggs are fun! Here is a link of some blue layers. As you know EEs are a surprise when it comes to egg color unless you buy one that is already laying. Depending on what country you are in, Araucanas may be next to impossible to find. I have an Ameraucana and she is cold hardy and a reliable layer of medium sized pale blue eggs, however she is quite skittish (I'm not sure if this is typical of the breed or not). Another breed I don't know much about is the Whiting True Blue which you can order from Murray McMurray if you are in the US. Here is a link for them.

I'm sure you will find at least one blue layer to add to your flock when the time is right!

My Black Ameraucanas lay lovely blue eggs. In the spring and summer they lay an egg practically every day.

My Cream Legbar is a great little layer. She gave me at least 3 eggs a week all through the Winter without any supplemental lighting. And she pops them out even faster the rest of the year. Her eggs are a comparable size to my Orpingtons despite the fact that they must be twice her body size.

When she started laying her eggs were truly blue. Now that she's about 18mo they're pretty pale and barely blue. BUT she's a sweetie, she's very handsome with her sweet little topknot and she's super reliable.

My CL and one of my Orps just obliged me by laying this morning so here is a picture for comparison. Lavina the Legbar is 18mo and the Orps are 30wo and just beginning to lay. And this photo doesn't really do Lavina's egg justice. As I said, it's pale and barely blue but it's more blue than this pic I took under bright light indicates.
