Best breed choice for "friendly" rooster

400

Dominiques! Ours were the sweetest little lap chickens we've had so far! My Swedish Flower Hen roos were well-mannered, too. Not as cuddly, but they never showed any kind of aggression.

What seperates a dominique from a barr rock in appearance? They look very similar.

Plymouth Rocks are larger birds with single combs, although hatchery birds tend to be on the smaller size often. Dominiques are a rarer breed with rose combs. Very nice chickens! There are so many choices! Mary

Ahhh i see. I do not know that rare is a good idea for me right now. I would be better suited with a hardy, common, breed. When the girls get bigger if they want to get into the breeds i will have alot of fun with it. But right now i just need common mutt farm chickens. They do look nice though.

I am now in the market for a new rooster after mine atracked my child. If anyone still here, wondering if any new thoughts. Jersey giants have been recommended to me.

Haven't had a purebred JG rooster but have had several half and quarter bred ones and every last one was sweet, not people aggressive at all and even fine as family pets. Several went as flock roosters and they were fine. Mine were huge but great birds and cared for their hens.

Dominiques are considered America's first chicken. Can't go wrong with originals

VERY hardy little boogers and they're easier to find than you'd think. And very affordable. Try the hatcheries online.

Dominiques are known for being hardy - they are not common as they were over a hundred years ago since production breeds were created and marketed. They were the most common backyard chicken at one point. They are a great all- around chicken, which is why I have some in the incubator now. I can't wait to raise them up. I bought a dozen hatching eggs from a local source for $25 - I felt a good price and I didn't need to pay for shipping. His cockerel just placed very highly at 2 shows - while show birds aren't necessary for me - it shows me that he is breeding to the standard for the breed, which I think is a good thing. I want good representations of the breeds for any chickens I have, and Doms are supposed to be docile, friendly, good foragers, and sometimes broody (for a self-sustaining flock).

Thanks to the OP for asking the question since aside from trying the Doms I am looking for at least one other calm, friendly breed. I too have children. We have only had roosters that were Marans, one we had to cull before 20 weeks for aggression and the second is only around now until I can raise up a replacement protector. He's a BCM and attacks my husband regularly.

Does anyone have any experience with Buff Orpington roosters? I have 24 straight run, so I'm bound to have lots of cockerels. The only other straight run I have is Silkies.. and I am not planning on keeping a Silkie roo. I'd rather have a standard size, in case I decide to let some eggs hatch in the future.

I have a buff roo. I don't baby them.

Only one time in his juvenile stage did he try to challenge me.

Other than that he is docile and a good protector of the hens.

But I also have an ee,barred rock, silver wyandotte,Rhode Island red and a bantam roo in the pen with him and 50 hens.

So I have plenty of hens and other roos to keep each other in check.

He is know 3 years old.
