Hello! My family and I are very interested in starting a small egg laying flock. We are in Cherokee County GA, north of Atlanta. Which breeds would be candidates here? Can we mix them? We are just looking for hens. Local ordinance does not allow roosters. From some previous research I was looking at Rhode Island Red. We welcome any input. Thanks! Ben

You have a huge range of breed suitable for your location, including RIR's (one of my favorites). You can have a mixed flock, but sometimes when the birds are too different (as in size or those with top knots mixed with those without), there can be some picking going on.

Have fun and thanks for joining us!

It’s nice to meet you!
Rhode Island Reds are great egg layers, I have one RIR hen and she lays a lovely brown egg everyday.
My favourite breed would have to be Brahmas, I’ve got 27 of them.
They’re good egg layers, great winter layers but they don’t lay as much as the RIR.

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

I am a huge fan of Black Australorps and Buff Orpingtons. Both great layers, very weather and health hardy, friendly docile birds.
