Best Chicken Breed

Hi there,
This really has no answer.
1. Chickens are individuals, you can't make statements across breeds.
2. Poor breeding/good breeding makes a lot of difference.
3. Climate. Some breeds do better in different climates and set ups.
4. How they're raised.

Also depends on the makeup of the ffamily. How old are the children, and how many? How well behaved? Are they loud and boisterous or can they be quiet and calm? If told not to chase the chickens, will they listen? Will they fight over baby chicks and whose turn it is to hold them?

Regardless of breed you definitely do not want cockerels or roosters around small children, say under the age of 12.

The chickens you can get. Generally speaking Buff Orpintons, Black Australops, an easter egger and a leghorn would give you a pretty basket of eggs, and these birds tend to be easy to get. I have always liked a mixed flock.

I would strongly recommend if this is your first flock, I would recommend on not keeping any cockerels that you accidentally get. Especially if your family has young children. You have years to do this hobby, and you can later work into roosters and hatching, which is quite fun, but does take experience.

@nuthatched answered this perfectly!

If you live in a warmer climate, research heat hardy breeds. This is our second summer and we're still trying to create a decent atmosphere for our girls (and for us). I realize we're helicopter parents, but if you're wanting to raise chickens that are family-friendly, I'm assuming you'll want to hang out with them even in the heat.
