Best company to order from

What is the best company to mail order chicks from? Any companies to stay clear of , advice and so on.

I've only dealt with Meyer and McMurray. With Meyer, I only ordered six and within a month we had lost three, so I'll never order that few again. Just received 30 from McMurray and so far so good, only lost two within the first 48 hours.

I have ordered from both McMurray and Ideal Poultry. Ideal, because I live in Texas - I felt better about them shipping one night and me getting them the next morning at the post office. Having said that - the McMurray birds were also in superfantastic shape when I got them years ago. I ordered 23 Buff Orpington pullets and 2 roosters from Ideal this year, and now find myself with 5 roosters. So - I don't know if somebody was just having a bad day in the sexing bin - or if 3 of my pullets had an unexplanable sex change at some point. Seriously, I think both of these places are good and reasonable. Ideal runs specials a lot and if you sign up for their newsletter, they email you when they have specials available. If you don't care that these birds mostly are pretty much not show quality, I would consider either one.

Oh - and Ideal will ship less than 25 birds, which I like.

I had a horrible experience with Meyer. Not only with loosing an abnormal percentage of chicks, but also customer service, wrong chicks, replacing the chicks, etc.

Mcmurry is probably about the closest to you. But I dont know if there is a big lag time in getting mail to the rock or not.

I ordered 25 from McMurry that were delivered on July 2. 27 arrived with the order (which is consistent with their policy regarding one "free" chicken and the inclusion of a rooster at their discretion. All are doing amazingly well and we have not lost a single one to date. Buff orps, barred rocks, marins, a couple of RR and what appears to be the free brown leghorn who is a riot. Too early to know how accurate the sexting was.
