Best deal ever on lumber :) that I've seen anyway...

I've made several animal pens, compost bins, and cold frames out of salvaged pallet lumber. Sometimes you can use them as is, other times you have to take them apart which is a bit of time but not that hard to do. Works out fine for me. A water softener place at the end of my street puts their unwanted ones out by the road for free all of the time.

And, of course, there is always dumpster diving!

Thanks for the tip about filling out the questionnaire online for the employee... I will be doing that. I occasionally come across an employee with an attitude but when that happens I just thank them and go find someone else! There have been times that I have gone to 3 or 4 people before finding someone that was willing to help me! I have noticed that the men tend to want to help more but that could just be the ones I have worked with. I am one of those women that lives by the work smarter, not harder philosophy and as far as I'm concerned going into an air conditioned store and begging (graciously of course) for lumber is easier than digging through dumpsters. I would dig through dumpsters, don't get me wrong... I just REALLY don't want to!

As for LOWES, they are officially on my bad list after last week. I went in to buy some hardware cloth (they are cheaper than Home Depot) and noticed that I had been undercharged. I told the cashier that she had not charged me enough and I'm not kidding, it was like I had just grown a third eye! She didn't know what to do. I told her I just wanted to pay the difference and leave, she couldn't handle that. She had me escorted to customer service! (while my two children, 14 and 6 stayed in the garden center!) When I got to customer service the store manager asked me what the problem was, I told him I was undercharged for my purchase and just wanted to pay what I still owed. It was like $14.00 or something and I felt kind of guilty. He looked at me and asked me "YOU owe US money? And you told us about it?" I told him of course I did and that my honesty was probably going to be my downfall but I just wanted to give them the $14 I owed them so I could go home. He also looked at me like I was nuts and told me I didn't have to pay it. THEN I was escorted out of the store like some nutball!!! LOL

Yep, I think I will stay with Home Depot!!

If you have a Habitat for Humanity surplus store we go there too, nails, screws, hinges, wood, windows, paint, lights, etc. everything much cheaper than new
