I'm thinking of getting some quail eggs this summer and raise them as pets. Most websites writes that they need game bird/hen starter feed, and later quail/hen/turkey food.
Can they eat anything else and stay healthy? For only a few, two or three quails, I can't buy a 20kg starter feed. Some people says that they can eat quality budgie, small bird food, is that true?

5 kg bags are suitable as they come in both chick and adult sizes, chick containing more protein. They do eat seeds etc but they arn't enough nutrition for them, you could provide both and let them pick away.

Yes, they can eat bird food. It would be good for them if you added a little to their diet. Also, I would recommend putting some diatomaceous earth in the water because it will make them healthier (shiny feathers, more eggs) and protect them from some diseases.

No, they can't thrive on bird food. Do you have a local farm store? Mine sells 30% protein game bird food by the pound. It also sells 5 lb. bags of 24% protein game bird food. If all else fails, Amazon sells small bags of game bird food.
