We have a rescued rottie...sweetest thing in the world AND well-trained! We introduced the chicks to him a week after they were born. When he lies outside, he guards the coop by barking or growling at the neighbor's cats, squirrels, and sometimes passing strangers!

Rottweilers were bred in ancient Rome as cattle herders. It seems our boy is content with just the chickens.

I think a lot of different dogs could work with chickens, it just depends on lots of things (boy, that was helpful, wasn't it?!) I've got a big old lab, part German Shepherd, and a young one, part blue heeler and they don't bother the chickens at all.

Yet I was raising a lab/heeler mix puppy for my mom last fall and all she wanted to do was chase the chickens and pull their tail feathers!

You just never know till you try!

Sweet beagle, btw. My family's first dog was a beagle named Snoopy of course!
