Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum so I hope I don't repeat an old question, but I'm trying to choose the best dual purpose bird to breed for meat. I would like to get as much dressed weight as possible (from a bird that still has a brain), but if I wait until after the last frost to hatch the eggs (don't want to use any lights - just a broody hen) they'll only have 22 weeks to grow until winter hits (we're in upstate ny). I'm leaning towards Buff Orpingtons since I've heard they dress out well, are friendly, and are pretty broody, but I'm worried that they won't mature in time. Do I need to go with a smaller, faster growing breed like Delaware or New Hampshire? And would white or Columbian rocks also be faster growing, better meat birds or about the same? I can still use a Buff as my broody hen even if I go with another breed, but I do want to make sure the rooster of whatever breed I choose will have a good personality. I know that it makes a big difference where the line comes from, but just assume this is hatchery stock. Also, they'll be completely free range on a very large pasture and woodlot so I really don't care about super efficient feed to meat conversion.
