I have my entire flock (13 birds, ages 1week-1 year) on starter crumbles right now (oyster shell on the side) they all forage in their new run (it still has growing things 
so I know they are helping themselves to what they need.
The extra protein (20% vs 18 in the layer pellets I was using) is making them all very shiny & pretty looking! I wish I could find a small pellet version, but enjoy going to my local mill more so I will stick with what they have.
