Best Flooring/ Bedding

Keltara , I am a little confused about which sand I am looking for is commercial grade the same as construction grade? Please refer to post #17. All I am sure of is I would prefer sand to anything else but do not know which to purchase. My 3.5 week old chicks are on shavings and I have tried paper towels also, and in the words of my 5 year old "that's yucky".

Is there a reason you prefer pine shavings over sand? I will try to find something to put the water and food on. They are so little they wouldn't reach it on bricks. They are so cute! :)

No lol. I have my chicks in a brooder in the living room and I like the way pine shavings smell I guess.

This is what I use.

Well, thanks for the info, I'll get some linolum flooring down first and then the sand, I love the rake you made, that's gonna make life easier...

Thank you so much for all the info, not knowing much to begin with ( I am a new chicken momma ) I am doing as much research as possible to make sure I give them the best environment that I can especially because my babies are city chickens ( not much free range acreage ) and all six are Bantams. I am going to get sand for the brooder today and get them used to it. I love your giant litter scooper as well and will be making one for the coop and run. I loved your blog and you have beautiful girls all eight of them. Again thanks so much you could not have been more helpful.

You are more than welcome. I did the same thing as you. I did a ton of research before we started our chicken adventure and I tried to pick out the best ideas that I saw, and then apply it to my set up. I am soooooo happy with all of the things I did. The only thing that I would change is that I would have made everything bigger. Currently being at 6 hens is my limit but I wish I could have more. I'm very grateful though for the 6 that I have. You are going to have so much fun with your Bantams!!

I'm so glad that you liked my blog.

I just checked out your blog...and saved it as a favorite to show my husband. We've been using old hay, but I LOVE the idea of sand. The best part is that we can get it for FREE because we live close to Lake Michigan!

I also love the idea of using dishpan tubs for their "nests" instead of going through the trouble of putting board dividers up in what we already have.

I still have the "kitty litter" boxes for their nest boxes, but I have since put dividers in between. The girls needed the extra privacy. I like the plastic because "if" someone poops, It's really easy to just spray out. I'm so happy that so many people are convinced and willing to make their lives easier by using sand.. It has been absolutely heavenly for me!!
