Best gun for varmints

The .243 can be great for deer hunting, and it doesnt have to be that close, either. And they will kill big deer.

I shot my first deer at 280 yards with a bolt action .243 and I dropped him with one shot. He was a 300 lb mule deer.

Know your gun, know your area, know your target. Practice, practice, practice.

Then you will know you will kill in one shot, and you won't have to be quite so worried about caliber size.

BUT this year I am using a .308, 'cause I love the big ones!!

Buster, I posted without reading some of the first posts. I see that you already have the Ruger 10-22 carbine. I really like the feel of mine. My grown son got his several years ago and I commented to him how good it fits in your hands. He bought me one last year. (Good son)A different twist is that he uses a shotgun scope and so had one on mine when he gave me the gun. Works great.

Plus if your wife ever has to shoot it, if you are gone, she will like how small it is. That would also be a good reason to have a 20 gauge shotgun, less kick if she has to use it.

With the way things are going, this may be a moot point. Perhaps you might have to look around your property for some nicely shaped rocks. Keep them by the door.

If your looking for something cheap yet reliable the savage mark ii .22 is a great gun. Mine does the job for me.

Well that's just not true. If he was just stocky, he would've replied "Hey, I'm just stocky." But no. He yelled "Fill your hands you son of a...." That's an indicator that he felt the guy had hit the nail on the head. Cowboys are very sensitive, you know. To a fault, even.
