Best heritage breeds for laying

. I don't think a lot of people give these little hens enough credit. This particular SSHamburg hen lays almost every single day. No they're not massive eggs, maybe a medium, but lay they do that the numbers more than make up for the size.

Did you get her from a hatchery? Did you get more than one or a few? It seems like maybe some hatchery strains lay more than other hatchery strains when it comes to some breeds. Hamburgs are supposed to be super layers based on their historical production numbers, so I'd love to know which hatchery (if it was a hatchery) you got your SS Hamburg from if you don't mind sharing. I had one a few years back and she laid sporadically. She was from a hatchery, but I don't want to defame them because it could be my management that caused the her poor laying, as in, she was low in pecking order and spent a lot of time off foraging with a rooster that stayed away from the feeders most of the time. So I'm not sure she ate enough good feed.

I have two of them actually, the other hen lays really decent as well. They'll be a year old in April. As you can see she has no interest in 'coop life'. Sometimes her sister breaks out of jail and moves into the barn with her, but she can resist the warmth so always goes back in a day or two. Both came from McMurray hatchery.
