Well, if you had standing water it could very well create a nasty anaerobic quagmire and you'd have to remove it, which would be a bear(grizzly) of a job.
Now we know you do not have standing water, actually a nice mild slope, you don't need it. I also just don't think gravel, of any size or shape, is a good substrate for a chicken run.

I only go a couple-few inches deep as that's all that needed for the poops.
I do also toss some other dry plant matter in there, dried grass clipping, dry leaves, straw, shavings from coop....all in small quantities to avoid any matting.
Too much of any one thing cause cause nasty pockets/packs of anaerobic slime.
Best to start slow and shallow, IMO, then observe and adjust to the situation, can depend on how many birds in the space and the weather. My run does not have a solid roof.
I just try to keep the bare ground from being exposed. My run is also on a slight slope, and things can tend to migrate downhill with all the scratching and hard rains, I either add more stuff at the top or get out the chip fork and move some back uphill.
