Best low cost dog food

3 of 4 dogs seem to be doing ok on 4health.....4th is having major gas and very loose poop.....will be buying a bag of 'something else' tomorrow for him.

sometimes it doesnt matter whats best FOR them but instead what they do best on...

my dogs are on a premium food (i use kirkland) and do great, but my parents cocker no matter what we tried only does well on pedigree (i hate the stuff) wed rather have a happy healthy dog at a good weight whos not throwing up/diahrrea ect on a crappy food, than a sick dog on a realy good one.

Some dogs require a long conversion period to get them on a new food. Did your parents mix the new food gradually in with her Pedigree? I know some holistic dog nutritionists say that lots of times a commercially fed dog will go through a detox period when switched to raw food. They'll get not only stomach upsets but some will actually break out with hot spots as their bodies rid themselves of the years of toxins. If the owners soldier through, it is said the dogs' symptoms do subside and they end up in great health.

My dogs all eat Avoderm chicken kibble. The old ones eat the senior food and the young dogs get the adult formula. My young male GSD eats around 3 1/2 cups and the female eats 2 1/2 cups. They are in great weight (no fat dogs here) and they have sparkling coats plus they are in wonderful health. The old dogs keep on getting older (I've got one that's 18 years old) and are in good health for their ages. The food runs around $40.00 per 30 pounds but my savings in vet bills make it worth every cent. PetsMart carries this brand and I can find it at a couple of other local places.

The dog who really struggled with the new food is my 13 year old shepherd mix who is covered in tumors (like 20+). He has a very sensitive stomach. Any change in his diet causes immediate and long lasting diarrhea. He does well on the pedigree, so will eat that for the remainder of his life. I may readdress the feeding issue once he is gone. The two young dogs did fine on the Diamond Naturals Chicken.....the other old dog didn't like it and would pick the other stuff out of her dish and leave that.

Well, I had my dogs on Purina Dog Chow for quite some time. I decided about 2 months ago to switch to Science Diet, for the fact that I thought they would eat less, and therefore poop less. Neither of these things came to pass. LOL So, I am switching back to Purina, not only due to cost, but they've always done well on it.

Science Diet is a low quality high priced food (as opposed to a low quality low priced food).

I didn't know that about Science Diet. But, I actually had the brand wrong-----don't know why I did that. I actually had them on Iams/Weight Management.

The great dog food debt is ever going. I feed purina dog chow and Track supply minichunks. My dogs are very picky. When fargo had to have surgery for intussusception, the vet removed 12 inches of his bowel when he was 9 months old. So he eats from a raised feeder. He will only eat dog chow with beggin strips as a treat. NO RAW HIDE for anyone. My wolves get a raw diet with dog chow. My mutts only eat the mini chunks.
