Best meat breed

Amen on both of these. Most of the birds I raise for eating at NH's so far, but I'm very new to the whole thing.

New Hampshire at 12-14 weeks have been good eating for me on the bbq or in the oven.
The breeds I like all rank high in these areas.

Top 5 picks for my backyard meat makers.

2. New Hampshire Red- Think Delawares but that they have beautiful firey red feathers.

4. Orpingtons- Big birds that are friendly fluff balls. They lay like no ones business, make awesome moms, and produce huge leg quarters. I prefer the Buff color.

Thanks Ellandeeranch. I love NHR as meaties and layers. They are a beautiful bird too. I would rank NHR at #1 if Delawares weren't mostly white feathered like they are. That white feathering does make a difference when one is plucked. The Orpingtons are such personalities that I haven't raise any for meat in two years. I have only one Orpinton hen left so I ordered some for this springs meat making batch. Hopefully I get a outstanding boy in it so I can justify keeping him around. I also got some Indian rivers coming. Delawares rooster crossed with NHR hen for anyone that doesn't know. These I have bred myself and can say are superior to both the parent breeds in meat and eggs. I didn't list Indian Rivers because the are a hybrid.
Side note I also have bred my Delaware rooster over my Orpington hens. I keep the girls as they are my best layer strain and butcher the boys at 16 weeks as a 6-7# roaster bird. The boys of this cross can get big, like over 10lbs big.
