Okay BYCers, I need some help as I seem incapable of making this decision, partly due to my inexperience in knowing how my coop is going to work and what chickens do.

I have two possible locations for my rollaway nest box.

Position #1 at the front of the coop, can be mounted higher for extra floor space but is closer to the fresh air end of the coop so may be cooler and more susceptible to frozen eggs.

Position #2 at the back of the coop, under the poop board, is closer to the back so potentially warmer, but will be nearly on the floor, taking up floor space. My chickens will have a run but we get winter here so may be in the coop a lot in the colder weather, possibly needing the floor space.

Any helpful insights would be appreciated, especially from #Woods coop owners who can help with the cold question.

I would suggest putting it in position #2.

The little floor space you loose is insignificant in amount.
I wonder if your chickens will actually use that box.:idunno Chickens sometimes choose places that puzzle their owners. How many chickens will you be keeping? Is that box large enough for the size of your desired chickens to stand up in? Chickens stand when laying an egg.
WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and :welcome

Well if they don't use it then I've wasted a bunch of cash :barniebut it is tall enough I believe. Position 2 was my original choice.

I think the nest looks great .. and I also vote for place 2.

If you can run electricity to the nesting box and stick a bit of heat tape covered by pipe insulation foam where the eggs wait to be gathered, then the eggs will never freeze.

Great idea, I have electricity in the coop (thanks to my brilliant hubby)
