Best Nesting Material?

We are building our nest boxes out of wood the size of dish pans. I decided to use dish pans so they would be easier to clean and they seem to be the perfect size.

We bought the dish pans night before last. Hopefully DH will have the boxes ready before they start to lay. LOL Girls are 15 weeks.

I just use pine wood chips like I use everyplace else. They seem to be OK with it.

I filled the nest boxes with a timothy hay. It smells nice, too.

I prefer shavings for everything.......floor and nest boxes too. Its so much easier to clean up with because it does not hang over the sides of the shovel and catch on everything which pulls the stuff off the shovel

I prefer wood shavings in the laying nests.. seems to keep the eggs clean. hay or straw seems to get mite and lice infested unless changed weekly..

I like straw for setting clucks because the eggs do not burrow down into it like into shavings..

you have to have high sides on your boxes if you use shavings or the hens push the shavings out..

I'm using wood shavings right now, but I wanted to know what other options were out there. I was thinking about cutting some taller grass and drying it out.
