I was looking at some of the "package" type deals at Murray McMurray for different brown or rainbow layers but then read on here that shipping isn't always so great with them. Our local feed and seed just cancelled the rest of their orders due to lack of sales so local is out. I am in central NC and am not sure if there are any local hatcheries, or what online seller might be a good, reliable option. I want a decent variety for a reasonable price - figured my LOs would have fun seeing the different colored hens and eggs. The enjoy helping with my current small flock (2 RIRs, 2 BSLs), just wanting to add to it since they are around 3 years old and not laying as consistently.

I used Murray McMurray and got the rainbow layers with no troubles they all arrived in great shape and are doing just fine. I live in IN but am out in the country so they had a little extra travel to get to my post office. I think it really has to do with communication the the USPS i followed Murray McMurrays suggestion and called the local post office ahead of time and told them i was expecting the chicks they called me on that sunday and i was able to go in and pick them up even though the office is closed sundays.

You might be surprised how many small breeders you can find locally. Craigslist and 4H, and the bulletin board at a feed store, are good places to start.

I know a lady who does a lot with swaps and auctions that can get me some pretty neat breeds, I guess I am just leery of bringing potentially really nasty stuff from private owners. I feel a bit safer with a bigger operation, but maybe it's not a huge deal in the long run? If I keep them quarantined for several weeks to watch for potential issues, would that be Ok?

I really don't know, sorry. Maybe someone else here can tell you if quarantining (and for how long) is a reliable safety measure. I did keep my new birds in a different brooder, and the next new birds in a third brooder, but they were all in the same room. I don't know if that counts.

I got a golden laced wyondotte and a speckled sussex fom the NC Tri County Coon Club in Cherryville, NC. Sounds odd and random but they have a really great setup. They have about 20 different breeds, including EE' and french coppers. Ours have turned out to be great layers and friendly.
