Best Pet Breeds for kids?

Buff Orps. would be my suggestion. Very durable, docile birds. My 5 yr. old granddaughter wanted to learn how to pick up the chickens by herself; here is her first try:

silkies can not fly. however if you are going to free range them you need to keep the crests trimmed.

he can't see a hawk however if I trimmed him up he would be just fine. cochins and brahmas are also very good choices with kids. jersey giants are good too.

All of my lg fowl are friendly and like to be picked up and petted but my Polish insist on it. My leghorn was friendliest as a baby and it does make the hunt for eggs nice when they start laying before anyone else and then give u an egg a day.

However my Polish jump up on the coop to be picked up and then snuggle into my neck at 10 months old. I did get them all as day old chicks and they have always been picked up and petted.

I would make sure that you handle the chicks right from the start the more you handle them the more docile. I don't have JG but I hear they are super sweet.

What about australorps? My kids will be 7 and 5 by the time we get chicks, and I was looking at getting lorps. I would like to find a good dual purpose bird (layer and pet that is!), and would welcome and recommendations.

I have a small flock of RIR and Barred Rocks. Both are well mannered, good with the children and are good layers. Some of them are a challenge for the children to catch but that makes it fun for them. Others will walk up to them and want to be picked up. Here's one of our roosters with my 6 year old daughter. She's been handling this one since he was a chick.

We are new to chickens, so can't say we've seen a ton of roosters, but in that very cute pic - the rooster looks HUGE

! So much to look forward to. I'm very glad we decided to add chickens to the family!
