Its good to see you more optimistic about the future and getting another pair of ducks as pets !
I'm glad that you are working thru what happened.
As far as what breeds you might enjoy the most...thats a judgement call for you to make. See some that you like the look of and go get 'em !
Definately start with ducklings NO MORE than 2 weeks old. 2 days if at all possible. The more time that YOU raise them by feeding, handling, bathing, playing with them the more they will become imprinted upon you and see you as Mom. They will loose the fear of (just about everything) and let you into their flock of 2, and you become their source of safety, security food and shelter. They still know to run from everything else except you. That makes YOU special and you always will be.
Its a great feeling to have a little animal thats scared to death, to relax and feel safe when you hold it. You'll enjoy that and come to need that everyday after school/work/chores as your personal reward and feeling of appreciation. When you take care of them,. they return that 10 times in affection and trust. A couple things that are becoming increasingly difficult to find in the human world.
I have my little mutt baby (not really, 4 mts old) girl thats just goes crazy when I hold her...she can;t stop snuggling and trying to wrap herself around my neck and stay as close as she can. her tail whips back and forth at light speed and she has this soft little duckling chatter thats almost like coo'ing. Its easy to tell that shes happy. That in turn makes me very happy to know that a small defenseless animal like that is willing to trust me that much. That little bird does more for me than she could ever understand. If you hand raise your next 2 birds you will enjoy that same sensation....and you will also have a couple friends for life...loyal, trusting and easy to please. All they want is some of your time.
The breed doesn't matter as much as the time that you are willing to give them. Some might be more nervous than others, some more vocal, some more curious. I think they ALL understand trust and security and when you give them those things their first/best trait will be affection for you.
I'm sure you;ll find some that you like. All ya gotta do is love 'em and they love ya back. Its nowhere near as complicated as it is with people...
Good luck with your search !
