Dh is building me a new coop. He wants to just do the runs and leave them dirt(in the woods) and put a sand box and some sod(just add some when needed so they can have grass). Is this a good idea? Is there anything better?

They'll destroy any plants in there in no time. Lots of people put sand in, with a board around the edge to hold it in, as it drains well and is easy to clean. Good idea to give them a bit of sod now and then.

I agree. All natural surfaces give them area for scratching which is an instinct they have. They can also get grit, food, bugs, etc. from the natural surface. Mine loved the grass and all that they could find. Sod will be a joy for their feet, just like ours! They also love to "bathe" in the dirt...don't ask why. They absolutely LOVE it!!
