i am thinking about ordering a few turkeys this march and have some questions
how high can turkeys jump with wings clipped?
how much would a heritage turkey eat?
choices of turkey
Narragansett Royal Palm and Bourbon Red which turkey is best for the below

can free range(fly well)
will go broody
lays good
doesn't eat to much

I've never wing clipped my birds, but even with primary feathers on one wing clipped ,they should be able to get up several feet. The narr's are great brooders, lay well and should fly if they don't come from a line that was bred for max weight. As for how much they eat, well......they don't call them "Gobblers" for nothing!

The biggest turkeys will not get off the ground very high with wings clipped. Light breed hens like the Royal Palm might get over a 6 foot fence now and then if they have a good reason to do so ( like being chased or good nesting spots). All turkeys go broody. All of them eat alot. If you plan on eating them, the Royal Palm will not have the breast size the other two have. The Royal Palm is know to be more disease resistant than the other two breeds.

RP's have good taste and are small and don't eat as much. They can all get up pretty high with clipped wings. The BR's and Narra's will have more meat over the breast. They are all 3 good breeds so you pick which one you think looks the best. I love the Narragansett colors the best.
