When. Time comes, I will be looking for 3 to 4 hens for laying eggs. I plan on building a chicken tractor style coop. Should I get chickens based on how they look or look for chickens with behaviors best suited for smaller housing?

if you want layers look for them, breeds good for your area, than what you like the looks of

Also consider where you live. If you are in a cold climate then you need a more cold hardy breed. Try the breed selector tool at the top of the page under breeds. That might help.

How are you going to pull this off with your wife?

I went to the farm store and brought home a few chickens after hubby said NO MORE! Teehee... Honestly, rhode island reds, Cochins,Easter eggers, Sussex, sex links, Wyandotte's, ect... There are so many to choose from. You can buy standard or bantam(mini chickens). Research the breeds and find what's pleasing to look at within the docile breeds. Good luck.

Oh, we brought home chicks before our coop and run were built.

Australorps!!! My two girls each give me an egg a day faithfully. Brahmas also, mine are very sweet and handle confinement well and are easy to handle. I love my Barred Rock girls too! Awesome personalities and great layers too, very easily handled.
