best waterer and where to buy

i use a bell style waterer . we hooked it up to a five gallon bucket that sits on top of the coop and gravity feeds down to the waterer. there is a valve in the waterer that keeps it from over flowing. i like the fact i can fill up the bucket from the outside and its not breaking my back.plus you can't add medicines to metal containers. cost of waterer is 22/23 plus shipping from randall burkey.

This is the kind I have. It does not require a gasket.

Only disadvantage is you can't put ACV in galvanized. But these things last for years if you don't dent them.

I made mine. its a stock tank auto filler hooked up to a refrigerator veggie drawer with a hose hooked up to it. no hauling water for me. the hose has a pressure regulator on it so it won't cause it to burst, it is under 75 lbs of pressure reg down to I think 40 but not sure.

We just installed a small pvc type spigot toward the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. The spigot drips into a bowl set right below the spigot. Super simple... although still working on the flow rate

I have one of those and here is how I have to operate it: Place cap on spigot, fill, loosely install lid, place in coop, next and this step is key- remove cap from spigot while slowly screwing on lid. When you hear the water start to glug glug glug you are done. STOP! don't tighten anymore- just leave it. But no matter what you have to hear the glug glug. Even though it may look like water is not coming out if you don't get the glug glug then water is still coming out and won't stop. I had many trials and errors with mine. After 6 months with it I just broke down and bought a galvanized 5 gallon anyway. So much nicer. My advice to anybody is save up and buy the galvanized founts. Worth every penny.​

OK Here is the deal with the plastic waterer from TSC.
If you look at the threads with the top off you will see that they are divided into two halfs.
This will allow the cap to be threaded on two ways, one is correct one is not.
To do it correctly put the cap on and rotate it backwards slowly until it drops down into the threads and is LEVEL. Then screw the cap on until it bottoms out, then back off about 1/10 turn. If you do this in the correct threads it will screw down very easy, if it is not in the correct threads it will still screw on but not as easy.
Try it a few times and you will see exactly what I mean.

Here's the one I just built. It's just a rubbermaid tub with a low prfile toilet ballcock. The peeps don't have any trouble drinking from it & the water level stays up. To clean I just pop the top & tilt it over.

I read about a home made waterer: a five-gallon bucket with its bottom screwed tightly onto a plant base. I drilled 4 small holes about an inch from the bottom of the bucket, made sure the base was level and filled the bucket. The idea is that the holes in the bucket are lower than the top of the base so the water should only fill until the water in the base reaches just above the holes. Well, it doesn't work. Water keeps shooting into the base and over the sides until the water in the bucket reaches the same height as the holes. That's five gallons pouring into my coop! Upon reading some of the previous posts I am wondering if it was because I didn't put the lid on. Does this make the difference? I am going to try it tomorrow with the lid on and OUTSIDE the coop.
