shes an adorable welsummer, 3 weeks old. she is very much alive, but about a week ago she started to lay around and not do much- other chicks were trampling her- she'd just lay there. When she walks, she shuffles, and her wings go down to balance, Then she just lays there all day. I have had her separated for 4 days now in a cat carrier on our house. She is eager to eat yogurt but nothing else.

I will give it 4 more days and then i think I should put her down. If its a broken leg, will it heal? Whats the point of prolonging this?

Maybe mix some chick feed into her yogurt? Is she on plenty of bedding? It's really hard for them to balance if the ground is slick like the inside of a crate. I know what you mean by putting down her feathers to balance, my energetic Cornish crosses (yes, I know what I just typed) do that when they're running up or downhill. I'm not well educated on chicken broken legs, so I'm not much help there. Good luck!

3 weeks is a little young for Marek's... but where did the chicks come from?

Definitely mix some chick feed into that yogurt... she cannot recover without the proper nutrients.

What were you feeding including treats and supplements? How many chicks in how much space?

If it were a broken leg... seems like it would be detectable, maybe by some swelling...
:fl

Sorry, to answer you question... broomstick method might be good for someone inexperienced. Real small chicks I use kitchen shears and decapitate over the kitchen trash while wrapped in a paper towel and hanging upside down. :(

I might treat for nutrient deficit first... depends on the situation. Any chance she got into something moldy or poisonous. Cocci can also cause unbalanced walking and lethargy..

I had an Iowa Blue about 4 weeks ago that I was ready to cull. I really thought this bird was medically "retarded". It didn't know how to eat, didn't know how to drink, it would just stand there looking off into space. I fed it molasses water and mash for about a week by hand, just to keep it alive. I'd put it in front of water, dip its beak, it would swallow some water and then just stand there for minutes.

As a last ditch effort, I bought a bottle of Poultry vitamins/electrolytes and made up some water. Within in 2 days I noticed a difference. He started acting normal, started eating and drinking with regularity. Now he's the biggest and fastest growing out of that group of chicks. Guess all he needed was to get his vitamins/electrolyte uptake sorted out.

It's worth a shot..
