Well I killed my first chicken with an axe. I thought the bird might make it last night since it was drinking and actually eating some. This morning it was bad. I knew I would have to do this at some point as a backyard chicken farmer. I was nervous but knew it was for the best. Unfortunately my aim wasn't the best for the first whack so there was a second whack. I just kept saying "I'm sorry" to the little guy until his body was still.


My other birds seem to be fine. Not running around as much as I expected this morning but do they slow down anyway around this age as they have gotten significantly bigger? All have clear bright eyes but again not moving as much as they did last week.

Can you post a picture of your pen?Do you really think the tarps are making it too warm in there?Show us your set-up maybe someone can help

Will I have been meaning to post pics of my pvc tractor. Hopefully I will have some time today. You were so helpful to me waaaay back when all this was just a thought in my head. I even made rain gutter feeders like you did! My tractor isn't the most beautiful or perfectly functional but I was able to make it myself with no power tools and it cost around $120 with tarps and all. I do notice that when I go in even on a cool day it is much warmer in there. I do have flaps open to keep the ventilation going but still warm.

You can buy ether from a automotive supply store and it kills them very quickly. They go to sleep. If you don't want to do that, you can get some large newspaper and put it on a table and then hold the bird down firmly while you cover with the newspaper and quickly cut off the head with a sharp fillet knife. That way you don't have to see it.
