I put chicken wire up between my coops and use those little staples. Needle nose pliers work great for holding the little staples. Sure saves on the fingers!

To properly(And painlessly) use/install poultry staples, you have to hold them right, before swinging the hammer. Place the staple, between your index and middle fingers, with the palm of the hand holding the staple, facing you. That way, your hand is flat to the work, not angled, like it is, if you are driving a regular nail. Makes it much easier, and safer.

Thanks folks! My plan right now is to use square head screws and fender washers. I'm going to buy 1/4 inch hardware cloth that is roughly 23 gauge. Does that seem to go well together? I'm planning to order on Amazon so I won't be able to see it before hand.

For my hardware cloth I used this type of screw to attach it to the wood.
