Best way to sex Ameracaunas? Please help!

I would think you should be able to tell by now also.

I have 5 cute little true breed Ameraucanas I hatched out this spring that are 10 weeks old and I've been able to tell the difference in sexes for at least a week or so.

I also ordered some more EE pullets that are about 11 weeks old now and I can definitely tell that one's a cockerel. It's even trying to crow already.

I'll see if I can find a recent pic I took of the Ameraucanas to see if you can see the difference.

When is your friend going to pick them up for you?
Can the seller E-mail you some pictures maybe....just a thought.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Jean, I didnt think Paul Smith was breeding the brown reds, but thought maybe I was out of the loop with that. Thanks for letting me know. Have you seen people making up colors for their birds? Like they pick the true Ameraucana color that seems closest to their EE's color and tell you, sure, it's an Ameraucana, look at the color. Or they just make up something out of left field. That always amuses me.

I have 12 weekish birds from John Blehm, and those I can clearly tell pullets from roos. I had some of my own that took a lot longer to figure out.

Ideal Poultry is a hatchery in Texas.. just came to my mind, and they sell theirs as ameraucanas.

Here's a pic of the 11 week old EE cockerel that was suppose to be a pullet. Darn hatchery sexers!!!

He has the muffs & beard like the Ameraucanas, but check out his legs. His are greenish-yellow. That will be a dead give away if it's a true breed or not.

His comb is a little wider than the pullets.

You are so right. Some of the EE pullets I received last yr have a lot of Ameraucana traits including the slate legs, but not my order this yr. I have some very sweet, interesting EE girls. Most are very social. I have a few that are weirdly skittish.

I wanted to see if I could get some more green egg layers.

He is very pretty!!!! I wonder what he was crossed with? I have no idea what color combo you would call him. I can't keep him though, b/c I have to many cockerels now. I just took this pic to advertise him. If dh had his way, he'd get rid of all our roos.

BTW~ I love the movie Forest Gump. LOL!!!!

sorry to stick myself in here but I have been pondering my EE's ( i guess they are). one has muffs, one has nothing and one has muffs and a beard (excuse me if I use the wrong terms) the one that has both has a much thicker head and neck and is about 1/3 larger than the other 2. They all have practically no combs but what they have are light pink. I started wondering about the sex of this one because they were all supposed to be pullets. They are 9 weeks I think. Any ideas? I wont be able to take pics till tomorrow.

Wow, that second shot is kinda scary! If I saw that comin at me (at that angle!) I'm probably go running for the hills. Forget the guard dogs. I want some guard EEs!!!

haha
