Best Way To Shell Black Walnut??

Ummm... we used to give them to the dog to chew on. She'd gnaw the hull right off. Of course, she would then yack all over the place so maybe it wasn't the best route to go. I think she saw the walnut tree as The Great Giver of Tennis Balls.

I found the best thing for me was to put them in the driveway and run over them with the car during my normal trips. After a while the hulls are off. When they are dry, gather the nuts. If they are wet, they can still stain your hands or anything else. I usually crack them in a vise. My thumbs hurt less that way.

I would not give them to my dogs. While they both like to chew, one prefers swallowing over chewing. I really don't want to think about that too much.
