I have seven barred rock hens, now 4-years-old. Their egg production has dropped off over the past year and I get one or two eggs a day. I would like to get some younger hens for more eggs. This leaves me with the decision of whether or not I should get a rooster or just order in some chicks. If I do get a rooster, are 4-year-old hens too old to breed? Any suggestions from experienced chicken owners would be appreciated. Thank you.

I don't think they are too old to breed. Fertility rate may be a bit lower, but if they aren't the broody type you could incubate. I would always like to have one roo around to keep the hens happy. They are also protective of their hens, which can be a good thing.
