This morning I was feeding treats to my chicks and one was flopping around. I noticed she had a thread attached to her. I picked her up and happened to have scissors nearby so I snipped the thread to free her. I discovered that the thread was wrapped tightly around the base of her tongue!! I called a neighbor & asked if she and her 15 yr. old daughter could help. They came over. I held the bird on its back, steadying her head. My neighbor held her beak open wide while her daughter tried to snip the thread with a pair of my embroidery scissors (they have points on them like needles!) After several attempts she was able to free the bird!!
I checked the brooder box and discovered that the chick must have picked at the duct tape I had covering what I thought might be sharp edges. When I put the tape on I thought I had made sure that there were no loose ends to pick or pull. I won't use it again around my chickens after this.
