:welcome A teacher ! What ages do you teach ? I have great respect for special ed teachers. Can you include your general location ? Could the black spot be frostbite ? Pictures in the emergency thread will lead you to a probable diagnoses
My kiddos range from 9 to 13 years old! I will upload a pic, see what you think about the black spot and loss of feathers around her neck.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens! We are glad you joined the flock!:welcome BYC is a helpful site providing all of the information you need to know about poultry. There is always space for members on the BYC roost!:highfive: Molting is normal at this time of year. The black spot could possibly be a wound by one of dominant chickens. If it is frostbite, the black spot will eventually fall of. Frostbite generally occurs in large comb in waddles, e.g. "leghorns". Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!
