Bielefelder thread!!!!

I just hope to still be able to see some pure breed's still around that have not been crossed 5 years from now.
Me too!

I don't mind mutts. Out last two dogs have been mutts, and they are wonderful! But if you want a Doberman, I hope you can find a good, well-bred Doberman.

Same with chickens. I could end up with some mutts, but unless the world falls apart, I wouldn't be breeding them forward. I got my Chantecler roo because my roo had died. I wanted to be able to hatch chicks if the SHTF and I couldn't buy more chicks.

I bet people on this thread would know this easier than I could ask google.

What breeds of chickens have the chipmunk striping at hatch for males (or both sexes)?

I'm trying to figure out what Pip might be if (s)he is not a Biel.
Chipmunk striped chicks (of various degrees of striping) that I think Mt Healthy stocks:
Speckled Sussex
Easter/Olive Eggers (some)
Cream Legbar
Welsummer
Brown Leghorn
Barnevelder

I know what you mean about trying to prepare for if the SHTF, and that is one of the reason's why I went with the Biel's.

Thank you. I'm going through their catalog right now. Should have thought of that myself. 🤦‍♀️

I'm looking up each breed to see if there are "this doesn't fit" characteristics. Speckled Sussex have white legs, and my chick definitely has yellow. Probably not that.

I think the rest on that list have yellow legs...? Of course, Easter/Olive Eggers can be a lot of different things.

I keep telling myself, this chick was "the freebie." I just want to be able to keep it and not have it fight with my rooster.:fl If it's a pullet, it can be anything, I don't care. If it's a cockerel... I probably have to give it away, if I can find a home.

I am honestly hoping it’s a brown leghorn pullet. I don’t super love the leghorn personality, but they do have big combs, and a pullet is a pullet.

Fingers crossed for you!

I moved my chicks out to their spot in the coop yesterday. The move was traumatic, but they LOVED their new place!

They love the dust bath. I'm going to get a bigger one for them today.

Someone on another thread wondered if this was a cockerel (5 weeks old). I said I didn't think so, as I bought pullets and Biels are auto-sexing at hatch.

But... has anyone ever had a Biel pullet-looking chick who was actually a cockerel...? (I hope not...)
My barred rock at 4 weeks:

Welsummer or Sussex at 4 weeks:

Combs had me nervous. But they were both pullets.

Ideas on these chicks? One is a cream legbar, one is a Bielefelder:

Thanks! As long as she's a she, she can be anything. Yesterday, it was a bit of a gut clench to think that she might be a cockerel. Now I'm facing up to it and thinking about what to do if she is.

I feel reasonably confident that the other 3 birds actually are female, and are Bielefelders.

Pip (left) and Sunny.

6 weeks old now. They have their own part of the run. They'll have a "look, don't touch" period for at least a couple weeks.

Sunny is the one who likes to sit on my lap. :love Pip and Button will get up on it too, and sometimes all 5 will be up there. I'm ok with that. :)
