Bielefelder thread!!!!

Oh, faraday40, I love Cookie! I’ve heard about her before, and think she is amazing…or was??

I guess you could say I’m a cookie lover! LOL

Having said that, I ordered 6 baby Bieli girls from Greenfire Farms. They are due to be sent on Monday. I hope they will be arriving on Tuesday… I’ve cranked up the bathtub brooder: bought puppy pads, completely disinfected the Momma heating pad, and am patiently waiting for the big day.
Congrats on the biele babies. You will enjoy them. I happen to have some hatching today. So far 2 girls. (Not sure why, but I rarely hatch males) The bieles belong to a friend. I'm just hatching because of my hatching "addiction." The kids and I get the fun of hatching eggs and new chicks, but then can give chicks back to their real owners.

Cookie was an amazing broody. She passed away but her memory lives on. I hope to get another bantam orp someday.

I got Two Bielefelders From Murray's in April. They are wonderful to have around. Beautiful feathers and wonderful personalities!!

After falling in love with the looks and acclaimed friendliness of this breed, I drove 6 hours round trip to buy a one-year-old rooster and two 12-week-old pullets. He's the most beautiful, majestic guy--sweet, selfless, watchful, and gentlemanly with the twelve girls, who all cozy to him. At first, being used to the forceful ways of other breeds, I thought he wasn't breeding any of them because I never heard any squawking. But he's just that gentle that there's no fuss from the pullets! He has never shown the slightest aggression toward me, even when I had to handle him to example his foot. I absolutely LOVE the looks and temperament!

Amazing photo!!!
Happy rooster, surrounded by hens, free ranging on a beautiful landscape, with a rainbow in the background = a very good life for this boy

Thanks! Yes, I think he's quite happy with his harem of 12 girls and all the free-ranging they could want, protected by a coyote-hating German Shepherd! And me? It's balm to my soul watching them enjoy life....

The Bielefelders, though touted as a calm and friendly breed, still need to be handled from birth or they will be scared and aloof. I bought two 12-week-old pullets with my rooster, and they are scared of me still, two months later of daily gentle acclimation. I've been soft and slow, never grabbing one, finally now working up to petting on the roost in the mornings. One will allow a bit of petting and will even eat out of my mind, but nervously. The other is terrified of me. They are still ostracized by the flock, though "their" rooster protects them from any real aggression. I wish instead of buying pullets I had gotten them as chicks, like all my other very friendly, shoulder-riding, lap-snoozing girls.
But the good part is they will be laying at the same time as my other pullets, just a couple weeks later.
