Bielefelder thread!!!!

He sounds like the perfect rooster! I hope my little guys have such qualities.šŸ¤ž

I got the eggs from eBay. I ordered 18, and the seller sent an extra. Unfortunately one egg was cracked and a few eggs didn’t develop past a few days. I did assist with two hatches and ended up with 13 chicks! From what I can tell I have 8 pullets and 5 cockerels. I definitely plan on keeping all the pullets 😁
I bought mine off of ebay too to get my start. I bought from 3 different people there in 3 different states for different hatching's. That's why I have the different age groups here right now, with some that are still growing out. My rooster Hawkeye was from out of the hatch of egg's that I got from a guy that goes by skywalker on ebay.

Have a crazy hen that must have thought it was spring over here already. She started going broody yesterday and stayed in the nest box that has the 2 white fake egg's in it. She puffed up and tried to peck me when I tried to check for a real one. So I got a stick and forced her out of that box and into the one next to it that only had one fake white egg in it. Then I watch her stay in that box and reach over to try to steal the other 2 fake egg's. She's in the chick grow out pen that is serving as her broody breaking cage for now. I'm not wanting any new chick's right now.

How is everyone's Bielefelder's doing? Mine are doing well. I'm still waiting for the younger girl's to start laying egg's. Hopefully it will be soon. I have noticed that Hawkeye's attitude has started to change, and he's letting them eat when he call's the girl's for food now.

I have a feeding question. I've heard that Bs eat a lot. How much would a small flock of 7-8 eat in a month? My flock of 7 (no Bs in it) go through 50 pounds of all flock in about a month. I have 6 hens (Australorps and Orpington) and 1 Chantecler rooster.

That sound's about right for these. I use one of those feed buckets to keep from wasting the feed. I also pull up weed's and give them the leaves in the run, as I do not free-range mine.

In garden season, I give my chickens weeds/garden scraps 3-4x a week. The rest of the year, they get some kitchen scraps. I don't free range either. Too many predators.

Thanks for the info!
I know what you mean about predator's, and right now I have ton's of weed's out there on the 3 1/2 acre's after we got all of this rain.

2 of my 4 bielefelder boys got some significant frostbite on the combs and wattles in that recent cold snap, but everyone seems to be doing ok now.

I do free range my mixed flock of 25, but they go through a bit less than a 50 lb bag of feed in a week. 10 chickens are about 20mo. The other 15 are 9mo including my 10 bielefelders (4 cockerels and 6 pullets.)

Sorry about the frostbite on your 2 boy's. Will they be ok?
