My last Bielefelder hen, Nugget, died just over a week ago. She was a month shy of 3 yrs old. All but one died from egg yoke peritonitis over the last year. What is everyone’s experience with longevity?
My roo, Spatch, is the only Biel left.
I have a ten year old beliefelder! She's the only one I've had though, and I don't get much credit for her living this long because I just adopted her last year lol. But she's still doing great

Didn't you hatch any from the Bielefelder hen's? I see that you got one of those firehouse subs pickle buckets. I just bought 5 more of them the other day, so I'm all stocked up on them. I use them for different thing's.

As you see, I'm working with different rooster's this year. Hawkeye is gone and chasing other hens. Lol he was smaller then the new ones from a different batch that I hatched.

Last couple times I tried to get the buckets they were sold out. Guess word has gotten out. I still have some others I also use for other stuff... like storing the barley seed I sprout for them.

The ISA browns have such huge eggs I decided to only hatch their eggs. Of course now I don't know yet if they are male or female.

That happened with me in the buckets before, too. This time when my hubby called in the order I had him ask if there were any of them, he said there were 5 empty, so we told the guy we'd take them all.

I'm getting egg's of all sizes over here. They probably had them mixed with the bantam sized one's.The next hatch I do will only be using the biggest egg's, and I'll keep the pullets. I already have my bigger roosters now. It's time to start working on the hen's.

I have not owned many Bieles, but none have gone broody for me. I'm not sure if they are a broody breed.

My best broody (ever) was a bantam Orpington (English). She looked like a Cochin but without the hassle of feathered legs/feet. "Cookie" would go broody 3-5 times per year, would hatch whatever eggs would fit under her, was never "pecky" and was extremely dedicated and watchful of her babies. We never had a rooster her size so she never biologically reproduced, but she raised more chicks than I could count. Her max adoption clutch was about 35-40 chicks. She raised large orpingtons, serama chicks, turkeys, quail, ducklings, and just about every sized chicken in between. She would adopt any size, any number, any age (hatched within 4 weeks of each other), and any species. If it peeped, it was HER baby. Such an amazing little hen.

What a beauty! I love that she is such a good mother!
