My grandson and I were sitting in the chicken run watching chicken TV. Ricky the rooster was out free ranging as usual. Big Boss was in the run with the rest of the chickens (hens and other roosters alike.) Big Boss is an EE and he rules the coop and chicken run.
Everyone was happy, my grandson and I were chatting when all the sudden Big Boss let out this low, long crow. All the chickens ran under the cover of the coop. He, alone, stood out in the run, with this sound.
I looked toward Ricky, the older rooster that was dumped on us in February, and Ricky was standing perfectly still, head in the air. Big Boss was looking into some trees at the edge of the woods. Then he ran under the coop.
My head was turning this way and that trying to see what the problem was. I didn't see a thing. Then Percy, BeDazzled, Ranger, the other roos all started to make the same noise, from under the coop. I looked under the coop and all of them were lying completely flat on the ground. Big Boss was standing at the edge of the coop like at guard duty.
All the sudden I heard the call of a hawk, I looked up into the tree where it was coming from and sure enough, there was a hawk there. My grandson went running from the run yelling and swinging his arms and the hawk flew away.
In a few minutes, Big Boss came out, looked around and then started clucking for everyone to come out. Ricky started foraging again and it was like nothing had ever happened.
I'm really proud of my Big Boss!! Even though they're completely protected by their run, he made sure that everyone was safe! I went up to the house and got him the leftover cornbread from last night and he devoured it.
