Big chickens safer from hawks than small?

I've always heard from the ole timers from around here that black chickens seem to get less preyed upon from air attacks possibly because they resemble crows from the air. Even game chickens are hard prest to make it free ranging these days...every thing wants to eat chicken, even us!!

For some reason

Hawk swooped in a took my polish's head right off and came back to eat her within ten feet of DH! He didn't get to eat her but it was scary for us all.

For a while after the hawk would come in and terrify the chickens, the barred rocks always seemed better at hiding than the others.

ive considered arming the kids with bb guns and shooting at the hawks as they fly over. kinda like a no fly zone. maybe they will get the idea.
