Please help experts! One of my chickens is fertilizing my eggs. Is this the culprit? Thank you!!! I'm new here! -Jen happy chick owner

I think that is a hen, since its a Red Star, and rooster Red Stars are a different color then that. Could you post some pictures of your other chickens? Could a neighbors chicken be coming over?

I believe that is a hen as well, you may have a drop in gigolo in the neighborhood. You know chickens will lay just as many eggs without a rooster. They will just be infertile eggs - that will not hatch.

Welcome to BYC!

I think your picture is of a hen. I believe the RSL cockerels are generally lighter colored.

Hope you solve the mystery!

Males have very different feathering near the base of the tail. The feathers on the back of a hen near the base of the tail are broad and rounded. A rooster has long, thin, pointed feathers that start on the back and drape down the sides.

This photo shows what male feathering looks like. See the "Fabio" style neck feathers, and the long saddle feathers.

Thank you so much for the picture and info. My Chickens are 4 months old which is why I was unsure. I thought maybe those tail feathers take a while to grow. Thanks again!

x2 they are generally also quite shiny-looking and, depending on the breed, may have a comb and wattles much larger than the hens
