I have looked at what seems like hundreds of pictures, plans, designs of coops. I've printed a few pictures with features I like and gave them to my husband and son who have been doing construction for years. Their design is overall size 10 feet by 6 feet....coop 4x6, enclosed covered run 6x6. Will this be big enough for 6 chickens (3 bantam and 3 regular)? Planning on having the nest boxes accessible from outside. Are 3 nest boxes enough?

Well, I'm a newbie, too. Like you, I've done a lot of reading and research. So here's my 2 1/2 cents.

I will say, however, that I read a lot of differing opinions on this site as to how many square feet per chicken in the coop and in the run. Having Just (almost) finished my coop, please give your husband and son my condolences and wish them good luck!!!

A general rule is 4 square feet per bird inside, smaller birds need less. Outside allow 10 square feet per bird, smaller birds need less. Some recommend one nest box per 3 birds.

You probably have enough.

Hope this helps.
